Tribute to Blades promotion hero from 2016/17 who call out time’

Sheffield United promotion hero calls time on playing career at age of 36

Sheffield United promotion hero James Hanson has ended his playing career at the age of 36. Hanson, who helped United win the League One title in 2016/17 after joining from Bradford City, has announced his retirement following a stint with seventh-tier Worksop Town.

Hanson was signed as a mid-season option for the Blades during their record 100-point League One season, and he also earned promotion with Bradford City during his time in West Yorkshire, helping the Bantams reach the League Cup final while playing in League Two.

Hanson explained his decision to retire, saying: “I have been ready for the last three or four months.”I’ve been dealing with ailments this season, and my kids are getting older and participating in weekend activities, so I want to devote more time to them. I’ve been playing men’s football since I was 16 years old, and it’s taken its toll over the course of two decades.

“I believe it is the right decision, and I am excited to have some much-needed weekend time to spend with my family.” There will be many proud moments, as well as ups and downs, throughout your career. I just wanted to thank every team I’ve ever played for, as well as all of the players and staff I’ve met.”

Worksop manager Craig Parry added: “When you sign a player who has played as many games as he has, you can be a little concerned about whether they’ll fully apply themselves or if the buzz is still there for them.” But from the moment I saw ‘Big Jim’, I knew we’d get along and he’d be a delight to manage. He is a proper human being, a proper footballer, and a wonderful man, and he has had an amazing career. He’s been excellent both on and off the pitch during his time with us, and now that I’ve taken off my manager’s cap, I hope we’re friends for life because he’s a brilliant man. I hope he reflects back on his career.
