15-goal attacker and history-makers: 11 PL loanees who Sheffield Wednesday could target in January

Sheffield Wednesday are on track for relegation straight back to League One if they can’t turn things around soon.

The Owls recently sacked manager Xisco Munoz after failing to win in their opening eleven games of the Championship campaign.

They have since welcomed Danny Rohl to the club, who has previously worked as a coach at RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich and the German national team.

Rohl will be eager to finish the year strongly with his current crop of players, but could then look to the transfer window to boost their chances of staying in the second tier.

While it certainly wouldn’t be surprising to see the 34-year-old look to his native country, there are still plenty of promising young players in the Premier League who could be available for loan.

Here are eleven top flight youngsters they could target…

Jesurun Rak-Sakyi

Jesurun Rak-Sakyi was heavily linked with another loan move away from Crystal Palace in the summer, after netting 15 goals for Charlton Athletic last season.

The 21-year-old ended up staying at Selhurst Park and has made five substitute appearances, though is likely to be on the radar of a number of Championship clubs in January.

Sheffield Wednesday are likely to face a lot of competition for Rak-Sakyi, who would be a brilliant signing.

Facundo Buonanotte

Perhaps an ambitious one, but Facundo Buonanotte could well leave Brighton on loan in January.

The teenager has made only one appearance in the Premier League this season and had looked set to join Leeds United during the summer.

Buonanotte has already made his senior debut for the Argentina national team and would be an unbelievable player in the Championship.

Conor Coventry

Despite joining West Ham in 2010, Conor Coventry has heaps of experience in the EFL.

The midfielder was previously named the Hammers’ Academy Player of the Year in 2018, as well as the FAI Under-21 International Player of the Year three years later.

Coventry has enjoyed loan spells with Lincoln, Peterborough United, MK Dons and Rotherham United.

Tim Iroegbunam

Tim Iroegbunam was part of the England U19 squad who won the Euros last summer, before going onto enjoy a successful loan spell with QPR.

QPR and Rangers were interested in signing the midfielder in the summer, but he remained at Villa Park.

Iroegbunam has been sidelined since pre-season, but may find it difficult to pick up minutes in this very strong Villa side.

Daniel Jebbison

Daniel Jebbison has long been very highly rated and has also been linked with various clubs across Europe.

The striker only has two goals to his name for Sheffield United, but clearly has a lot of talent and could be ready for a return to the Championship.

Malcolm Ebiowei

Malcolm Ebiowei joined Crystal Palace from Derby County last year, after a promising 2021-22 campaign with the Rams.

The forward failed to score during a loan spell with Hull City, but is definitely worth a shot as he remains absent from the Eagles’ senior squad.

Lewis Dobbin

Lewis Dobbin enjoyed a promising loan spell with Derby County last season, before he was handed his chance with the senior team in pre-season.

The attacker definitely caught the eye during the summer and has been rewarded with three cameo appearances in the Premier League.

A loan exit for Dobbin would probably depend on Everton though, with the Toffees limited for options in attack.

Kaide Gordon

Kaide Gordon is highly-rated at Liverpool after becoming their youngest ever goalscorer in the FA Cup in 2021.

The winger made his debut in the Premier League in the same season, but has since featured for the youth sides.

With Gordon still far from Liverpool’s first team, the Reds could look to offload him on loan in January.

Shola Shoretire

Shola Shoretire is predicted to have a big future ahead of him, having become Manchester United’s youngest player to feature in European competition at 17 years and 23 days old in 2021.

The 19-year-old failed to impress on loan with Bolton Wanderers last season, but has enjoyed a positive start to the campaign for United’s U21 side, picking up three goals and three assists in seven games.

The Red Devils were reportedly considering sending him out on loan in the summer and could well reconsider in January.

Ashley Phillips

Ashley Phillips joined Tottenham Hotspur after making only seven appearances in the Championship for Blackburn Rovers.

The 18-year-old has since featured for the U21 side, but could look to return to the Championship on loan to continue his development.

Bobby Clark

Liverpool coughed up £1.5 million for a 16-year-old Bobby Clark in 2021 and went onto make his Premier League debut last season.

The teenager had a brilliant pre-season with the Reds, scoring his first goal in a friendly against Leicester City.

Clark still has a way to go before he is a regular in Liverpool’s squad and could be a very promising loan signing for a Championship club.
