In their most recent matchup with Preston North End, Sheffield Wednesday played poorly. Nevertheless, they placed ninth on the standings at the end of the game.
At this stage of the season, Sheffield Wednesday supporters would have undoubtedly finished ninth in the Championship standings during the summer.
However, after their 1-1 draw with Preston the previous time out, there is still a persistent feeling that the Owls are in a somewhat fictitious league position.
After the game, Danny Rohl was furious with his Sheffield Wednesday players because a number of them weren’t up to the task.
The Owls, who are now undefeated in four games and have just lost once in six, are only five points behind Blackburn Rovers in sixth place. The two teams will play Tuesday night at Hillsborough.
Despite that subpar performance against Preston, a large number of Owls supporters are celebrating their team’s current league standing on social media ahead of the encounter.
Rohl has now demanded that the league position discussion halt. Rather, he wants to discuss every performance.
Speaking to the press on Sunday, ahead of the Championship clash against Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday, Rohl reiterated the fact that he’s a very ambitious manager.
He urged that discussions regarding the league standing be put on hold in favour of discussing the Owls’ “identity” and performances.
“My team and I are ambitious, and we need to stop arguing about the table,” Rohl stated.
“The performance, our identity, our journey, and the things we need to work hard on must all be discussed.”
Wednesday is now nine points above the drop zone for the Championship. They could pass West Brom in eighth place with a victory over Blackburn Rovers, but it would be improbable without a significant goal differential change.
John Eustace lauds Sheffield Wednesday’s recent form
John Eustace, the manager of Blackburn Rovers, has some good things to say about Sheffield Wednesday before Tuesday night’s match, notwithstanding what Rohl claims.
Both the players they brought in and the players who were already there had positive experiences there, he said.
“They have the experience, the manager is an excellent coach, and they understand what the Championship is all about.
“They’re doing great, and the game will be challenging.”
After missing the Preston match due to suspension, Barry Bannan will make a much-needed comeback for Sheffield Wednesday against Blackburn Rovers.
The performance needs to be the main focus, as Rohl states. However, there will undoubtedly be discussion regarding the team’s league standing if Wednesday wins and finishes in the top 10.
