Danny Rohl’s message to ‘disappointed’ squad players as Championship survival fight heads towards its finale

The fact that his Wednesday side have shown a ‘strong jaw’ after a manner of setbacks in 2023-24 and responded pretty quickly is maybe the one which most observers would point to.

Certain key players have also stepped up to the plate at key junctures.

Rohl would agree with all that, for sure.

He thinks the best is still to come and does not rule out the possibility of a few improbable heroes rising to prominence.

Throughout 2024, players like Cameron Dawson, Jeff Hendrick, Ashley Fletcher, and Reece James have been benched.

Rohl has been deeply impacted by their ability to remain optimistic despite their circumstances.

In the event that Wednesday pulls off their own “Great Escape,” the German will acknowledge and cherish the contribution of the team members who have struggled on a personal level.

“For me, when people ask what is the biggest thing, this is the biggest thing-that we bring all the players really behind in one direction, even when they are disappointed,” Rohl stated. His team will play again on Sunday lunchtime at Blackburn Rovers.

“This environment is the signal for everybody outside that, as a group, even if you are not part of the starting 11 – and even if you are not part of the squad sometimes – you are still committed to our goal and it is fantastic to see and what I really like from our players.”

The Owls’ poor performance in the final round of games was exacerbated by the unexpected victories of Plymouth Argyle, Birmingham City, and Blackburn Rovers, which prevented them from defeating Stoke City.

Wednesdayites, who were idle on Saturday, will be in dire need of a favour or two this coming weekend before taking the field at Ewood Park.

Rohl, for his part, is only focusing his energies on what is within his coaching remit. If a favourable result does arrive, it is a bonus.

The German continued: “Next week is ‘special’ as all the teams are playing before us and we will know the results.

“At the moment, we are getting nobody’s help.

“You look to the table on a matchday and think ‘maybe this’ (will help). But forget it and focus on yourself and now we have to be mentally strong and keep going.

Rohl, for his part, is focusing mostly on the domains that are under his coaching jurisdiction. If a favourable result does come to pass, it is an added benefit.

“Next week is’special’ as all the teams are playing before us and we will know the results,” the German continued.

“At the moment, we are not getting any help.

You look at the table on a matchday, wondering if this will really help. However, put things aside and focus on yourself; we must now continue to be mentally tough and proceed.

It should give the Owls more energy when they play again after what happened on Saturday, when they lost two points against Stoke.

“It’s amazing and the reason it makes sense to invest everything from ourselves again,” Rohl continued.
