Sheffield Wednesday have been warned about their future conduct for the use of pyrotechnics and “crowd control misconduct” in their League One play-off semi-final second leg win over Peterborough United.
Following ‘crowd misbehaviour’ during Peterborough United’s victory, Sheffield Wednesday was fined by the FA.
Sheffield Wednesday’s use of pyrotechnics and “crowd control misconduct” against Peterborough United on Thursday, May 18, has resulted in a £50,000 punishment and a warning regarding their future behaviour. This afternoon, the Football Association’s website verified the punishment.
Following the Owls’ victory at Hillsborough via penalty shootout, thousands of supporters stormed the ground. Wednesday pulled off the greatest play-off comeback in history to go to the League One play-off final, with Jack Hunt scoring the game-winning penalty kick.
Sheffield Wednesday was fined £50,000 and given a warning about their future behaviour for crowd control misbehaviour during their EFL League One match against Peterborough United on Thursday, May 18, 2023, according to a statement released by the FA.
“Sheffield Wednesday acknowledged that they did not take the necessary precautions to guarantee that their fans and/or spectators—as well as anybody posing as a fan or follower—conduct themselves in a disciplined manner and refrain from entering the pitch.
“The club’s sanctions were imposed by an independent Regulatory Commission after a hearing and its written reasons can be viewed below.”
They stated on Wednesday that they will “make no further comment at this time” and that they “acknowledge the outcome of an Independent Regulatory Commission”. You may read the whole set of written justifications for their sentencing here.
Josh Windass’ header in extra time helped the Owls defeat Barnsley 1-0 at Wembley to complete their Championship comeback. At the national stadium, more than 40,000 Wednesday supporters cheered the club on as Darren Moore led them to promotion triumph.
But this time around, Wednesday has not gone as planned. Their losing streak of 12 matches has left them bottom of the standings at the moment.
