Former Sheffield Wednesday boss expresses major Owls worry amid Dejphon Chansiri point

The English Football League has placed troubled Championship team Sheffield Wednesday under a registration embargo due to outstanding payments to HM Revenue and Customs.

Following the most recent significant off-field incident at Hillsborough, former Sheffield Wednesday manager Chris Turner is concerned for the club’s long-term survival. On Friday night, word spread that the English Football League had put the Owls under a registration embargo due to outstanding debts with HM Revenue and Customs.

As a result, Wednesday, who are currently at the bottom of the Championship after losing all 13 of their first-round games, are unable to register any players without first receiving formal permission. An embargo has also been placed on the Owls in previous years, and this latest development coincides with a month after owner Dejphon Chansiri declared he would no longer be investing “additional money” in the team.

Chansiri, a divisive figure among the Wednesday fan-base, has appointed German manager Danny Röhl and three coaching since his epic statement. Röhl is their third boss since the club secured promotion from League One last May, with Chansiri parting ways with Xisco Munoz and his backroom team earlier this month.

The Sheffield Wednesday Supporters Trust have called on Chansiri to provide some clarity over the club’s financial situation. Ex-Owls goalkeeper Turner posted on X: “Another embargo!!!!! I worry for the club long term.

“Clubs always start in decline by not paying their HMRC bills. It then snow balls If it isn’t paid before January no new players. What must the new management team think only three weeks into their careers here? A change is needed.”

Röhl is putting the finishing touches to their preparations ahead of tomorrow’s monumental clash with relegation rivals Rotherham United. It will be Röhl’s first home match since taking over the reins from Munoz. Röhl is looking for his first points as boss after overseeing back-to-back away defeats to Watford and Plymouth Argyle.
