Sheffield Wednesday have endured a rollercoaster of a campaign so far, having previously looked like they would rescue their Championship status with some excellent form in December.
The Owls managed to pull themselves into safety with five victories in eight games, but a four-game losing streak cast doubt on their future once more.
But after four games, Danny Rohl’s team has amassed nine points and two clean sheets, suggesting that they are finally getting some momentum.
In recent weeks, Ike Ugbo has taken the stage, but Pol Valentin has also emerged as a surprising hero.
After coming to Hillsborough from Sporting Gijon, the defender struggled to make an impression at first, but he has now settled in and is now among the first names on the team sheet.
Valentin is “fast becoming a fan favourite,” according to journalist Alex Miller, and the Spaniard appears to be enjoying his football in England right now.
Valentin responded to the supporters’ spirited victory over Bristol City on Instagram over the weekend by promising something.
Valentin tweeted, “We believe in each other and this team will fight until the end,” alongside a few action shots from Hillsborough.
Look how far Sheffield Wednesday have come…
Before Danny Rohl joined the team, just a few months into the season, Sheffield Wednesday appeared to have conceded the season and been relegated.
There was a lot more work for the staff to perform, and the standards were set far higher than they were under Xisco Munoz. But even though Rohl had some excellent ideas and strategies, nothing would happen until the players put in a lot of effort and were convinced by his plans.
Even if there have been some setbacks along the road, those players are now enjoying the fruits of their labour for the hard work and devotion they have put in since October.
The club’s comeback has been aided by players you might not have expected to be propelling them to stay in the second division, such as Marvin Johnson, Michael Ihiekwe, and Pol Valentin.
With 12 games remaining, Sheffield Wednesday must maintain this level of play to avoid relegation; a lapse in performance similar to what occurred last month will not be sufficient.
This weekend, a decisive victory over relegation-threatened Rotherham United would go a long way towards putting them equal on points with 21st place, while also putting them a massive 16 points ahead of The Millers.
