Rohl explains why he brought one Sheffield Wednesday star back to the squad

Ashley Fletcher has been given another shot at Sheffield Wednesday by Danny Rohl.

The Owls manager told The Star that the attacker has proven himself worthy of a spot in the starting lineup by making an impression in practise.

Ashley Fletcher, who has only scored two goals in the previous two years, came to Sheffield Wednesday during the summer on a Watford loan.

Before the trip to Bristol City, the striker was absent from the matchday squad for four straight games. He has only managed two starts in the Championship.

Fletcher is still yet to score for the team, but Danny Rohl has acknowledged that he is putting in a lot of effort in training and might have a fresh start at Hillsborough.

According to Rohl, “He [Fletcher] showed a great reaction.”

“I’m searching for something like this, and he’s been working hard in the training. I usually find it difficult to tell someone that they won’t be on the squad.

“But I’ll take you (into the squad) if you work hard in your training and show something.”

Danny Rohl has proven he isn’t scared to bring guys in off the bench by giving Reece James and Marvin Johnson another chance to play for the team.

Does Ashley Fletcher have anything else to give?

Despite Ashley Fletcher’s modest five-minute cameo against the Robins, it appears that he has made a strong comeback into Danny Rohl’s plans based on his training output.

Given how difficult it is for the rest of the attack to put the ball in the back of the net, the Sheffield Wednesday manager’s desire to experiment and give marginal players a chance to impress is reasonable.

But Fletcher looks too far away from the player to accomplish that.

Only twice in his career has the 28-year-old scored more than five league goals in a season: in the 2019–20 season with Middlesbrough and in the League One campaign with Barnsley (2015–16).

He is more of a player to be brought in when you are about to be relegated since he is much below the calibre required to keep Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship.

Fans will have to wait and see what kind of magic Rohl can perform on Fletcher. All we can do is have faith in his plans.
