Scathing verdict on Sheffield Wednesday; management urgent intervention is key..

Danny Rohl finds his side still in 23rd place of the table and now two points from safety, following up a frustrating 1-1 draw vs Swansea City on Good Friday with a poor performance at the Riverside.

The scoreline absolutely flattered the Owls.

They conceded either side of half-time and saw Middlesbrough miss a penalty in the second half too, with Boro dominating throughout.

As per Sofascore, Boro dominated all facets of Monday’s game; they had 65% of possession, 23 total shots compared to Wednesday’s 6, and an xG of 2.23 compared to Wednesday’s 0.35.

Danny Rohl fumes after Sheffield Wednesday defeat vs Middlesbrough

Following the loss against Middlesbrough, Rohl was clearly upset.

It makes sense that Rohl would be more emotional than we have ever seen him following a Sheffield Wednesday game.

The final score doesn’t give too horrible of an impression, but on Monday there seemed to be a lack of effort on all fronts.

bad work-rate combined with bad defence led to the first goal, and poor work-rate alone was the cause of the second.

After the game, in an interview with talkSPORT reporter Alan Biggs, Rohl insisted that his players “show up,” and if they didn’t, they should “be quiet.”

Huge reset needed from Danny Rohl and Dejphon Chansiri

Sheffield Wednesday’s heads and efforts appear to have fallen at precisely the wrong moment for whatever reason.

They had won four straight games last month, which put them in a great position, but their performance against Middlesbrough was worthy of a team in League One.

Ian Poveda returned to the sidelines and entered the game late; his comeback in the upcoming weeks will undoubtedly be helpful.

But ahead of a crucial away game against QPR this coming weekend, the defence in particular needs to assess themselves, and Rohl could need to change up his game plan.

Maybe Sheffield Wednesday tries to attack too much when they’re not at home.

They didn’t have much possession of the ball today and would have been better served soaking up the pressure rather than attempting to mount rapid assaults with players like Anthony Musaba and Djeidi Gassama.

But after the loss to Middlesbrough, something has to happen.

Regretfully, such adjustment may need to wait until the summer, when Dejphon Chansiri and Rohl will have plenty of time to strengthen and improve the playing group.

This Saturday at 3pm is kickoff vs QPR.
