James Collins, a young striker from Watford, will trial against Sheffield Wednesday, a Championship rival, as the Owls continue to be interested in him, according to The Star.
In recent weeks, Sheffield Wednesday has been one of the teams to seize the opportunity to try and sign some promising young players. Making decisions about current academy players opens the door for potential newcomers to try out.
A few Owls prospects will be moving on, and James Collins, a striker, was one of those given the opportunity to make an impression prior to a possible move.
The 19-year-old is a player for Championship rival Watford; last month, news of his trial surfaced. However, it has since surfaced that Wednesday is giving Collins a closer examination.
The Star reports that Sheffield Wednesday are still evaluating him in advance of his anticipated departure from Vicarage Road. Collins played from the start in Tuesday’s 2-0 victory over Bristol City’s development team.
Collins’ contract with Watford expires this summer, so if he is released, a deal will come free of charge. Since moving from Hertford Town in January 2023, he has been on the first team bench against Stoke City in August and has gone on loan to Haringey Borough and Royston Town.
This summer, clubs all around the nation will be searching for new academy recruits. A lot of EFL teams have enjoyed bringing in young players released by their rivals, and Sheffield Wednesday might be hoping to do the same with a move for Collins.
The fact that he has been with the Owls for a respectable amount of time indicates that they are pleased with the 19-year-old striker. Time will tell, though, if he can prove himself worthy of a contract with the Hillsborough group.
The first team setup will be completely focused on the battle to avoid relegation, while academy staff members scan the market for possible recruits.
Sheffield Wednesday are currently ranked 22nd in the Championship standings. With four games remaining to escape the relegation zone, they are tied for the same number of points as Huddersfield Town, who are above them.
