These comments came after the Owls’ 3-1 win against Blackburn Rovers, a result which has taken them out of the relegation zone.
Wednesday made a brilliant start at Ewood Park, with Josh Windass executing an excellent lob in the sixth minute to put the visitors 1-0 up.
Aynsley Pears’ incredible own goal sealed the three points, although Marvin Johnson’s goal gave the away team the lead again in the 58th minute, after Blackburn’s prolific Sammie Szmodics had equalised minutes earlier.
After he played, Rohl’s team significantly increased their prospects of surviving, even though they had been in the drop zone for the majority of the season. With two games remaining, they will be looking to complete the task in the coming weeks after managing to escape the bottom three.
The Owls’ team will be feeling quite positive right now after this victory, but their manager brought them back to earth with a sobering message during his news conference after the game.
“The job is not done,” he stated to the Irish News.
“We put a lot of effort into leaving this (relegation) zone. For half a year, we tried everything. We seized the chance today. Over the past four to five weeks, we’ve had the chance. Overall, though, we were able to link our performance to a successful outcome today.
“I believe that although we played well against Stoke and Swansea, the outcome was not what we had hoped for. Today—a favourable response. I’ve had this feeling all week. We had good training.
“I believe my team gave a brave performance today. We played football the way we wanted to play, forcing them into mistakes.
Togetherness was evident on the pitch as well as off it thanks to our overwhelming support. They turned a trip game into a home game, so (much) gratitude to all of them. My team’s performance is exceptional, especially in terms of thinking and mentality.”
As previously said, the Owls still have two games remaining.
The fact that they are playing West Brom at home could really help them, but the Baggies still have a lot to gain.
They must continue as securing a play-off spot is not guaranteed, and they will gain a great deal of confidence from their performance against Leicester City the previous Saturday.
Even though they lost 2-1 at King Power Stadium, they were incredibly energetic and unfortunate not to score more than once during the game.
It could go the Owls’ way because the Black Cats won’t have anything to lose on the last day, but it will still be a difficult road encounter.
