Sheffield Wednesday breaking 7-year record is all down to Danny Rohl*

Before losing to Leeds United in the Championship, the Owls had won four straight games.

Sheffield Wednesday’s remarkable comeback under Danny Rohl has given them a realistic opportunity to survive the Championship.

The German took over as manager of the team in October, when they made the announcement. When the German arrived at Hillsborough, they were at the bottom of the table, having won only three of their first ten games – the lowest start to a season in club history.

Spanish employee Xisco Munoz, who had only been hired in the summer, lost his job as a result. However, after a miserable beginning to the season, the Owls have not looked back under Rohl’s direction and are hoping for yet another season in the Championship.

Since Rohl’s arrival, the team has made an amazing comeback, but none has been more outstanding than their most recent campaign.

The 34-year-old had a rocky start to his Hillsborough career, losing his first two games against Watford and Plymouth Argyle. However, on his third try, he triumphed over Rotherham United, another team fighting for relegation.

The Owls would lose their subsequent games before going three games without a loss in the Championship, one of which was a 1-1 draw against Leicester City at home.

Wednesday has won six of their twelve league games in 2024 since the year’s beginning. This is the first time in seven seasons that Wednesday has won four straight games, going all the way back to their fourth-place finish in the 2016–17 Championship season under Carlos Corberan, which ended in a loss to Huddersfield Town in the play-off semifinal. They accomplished this twice in the same season, going undefeated in April with six victories.

Although Yorkshire rivals Leeds United ended that run on Friday night with goals from Wilfried Gnonto and Patrick Bamford in each half, there was still optimism at Hillsborough considering their recent performance.

What was once a sizable gap between them and the teams above them has shrunk over the last few months, and as of the Saturday games, they are level on points with both Stoke City and Huddersfield. Rohl must take great pride in the manner in which his team has re-established themselves as a contender to avoid relegation.
