Sheffield Wednesday has a number of names on its radar and looks to be setting up for a busy summer transfer window.
Danny Rohl is hoping that James Beadle, Ian Poveda, and Ike Ugbo—two of whom are on permanent contracts—return to the team after their January loan stints.
Beadle would be on loan, and Sheffield Wednesday News recently disclosed that, in spite of Brighton’s challenging goalkeeping situation, Beadle will be going out on loan this summer.
While Poveda is attracting interest from other Championship teams, a move for Ugbo seems to be contingent on what happens with his parent team, Troyes, and their performance in Ligue 2.
Duncan McGuire is another name on the Owls’ summer want list; Wednesday attempted but was unable to sign the Orlando City
The 23-year-old is also back on Blackburn Rovers’ radar after McGuire’s January deal to Ewood Park fell through due to a paperwork blunder.
McGuire recently stated that while it would “take a lot” for him to visit Lancashire again this summer, he would be willing to speak with the team.
Alan Nixon confirms Sheffield Wednesday interest in Duncan McGuire
Journalist Nixon has now verified Sheffield Wednesday’s interest in USMNT forward McGuire, who has five goals in his first 11 Major League Soccer appearances this 2024 season.
Nixon said, “I believe so,” in response to the question of if Sheffield Wednesday will return for McGuire this summer.
Nixon also addressed Blackburn’s renewed interest in McGuire, stating that instead of making a loan bid, Rovers or any other team would need to purchase McGuire this summer.
At the conclusion of this year, his contract expires, but Orlando is negotiating a possible extension.
Blackburn Rovers had first agreed to a £2.3 million deal to sign McGuire on the final day of the winter transfer window, but that deal fell through. At the last minute, Rovers forged a loan-to-buy agreement, but that arrangement also fell through.
Sheffield Wednesday facing expensive transfer decision
McGuire and Ugbo appear to be the two strikers Sheffield Wednesday has its sights set on this summer.
Both have a tonne of potential for the Owls, but they also appear like they would be rather costly acquisitions for the team, so they will need to carefully consider their options.
You should plan to wait until Wednesday to learn the latest on Ugbo’s parent club Troyes’ and Ugbo’s personal circumstances.
However, McGuire might already have been signed by Sheffield Wednesday by the time they learn of his fate, so if Rohl is interested in him, they might need to take immediate action.
However, acquiring McGuire might preclude signing Ugbo or any other players that would require significant transfer payments.
The fee of £2.3 million was stated in January, and since McGuire has shown promise this season and has drawn interest from Europe as well, it’s possible that the price has increased, therefore eliminating Wednesday from the running for his services.
Nixon on X, though, indicates that they’re obviously interested, and the Owls might surprise everyone by spending big money on a player who would be a major addition to the team.
In any case, S6’s summer needs to be quite ambitious.
