Sheffield Wednesday eye Leeds United player in early transfer

The Owls are keen to reunite with one individual on the books at Elland Road

The Sheffield Star reports that the Owls may face stiff competition for the 24-year-old’s signature.

Poveda is no stranger to Sheffield Wednesday, having spent the latter half of the 2023-24 season on loan at Hillsborough.

During that period, he appeared 10 times for Danny Rohl’s team. Despite being limited by injuries, his performances helped Wednesday achieve an incredible comeback from relegation to League One.

Now it seems as though that has convinced Sheffield Wednesday to take a very clear stance over the future of Poveda, heading into the summer transfer window.

According to the most recent update, Wednesday are now looking to sign Poveda on a long-term contract before the start of the next season.

It is said that Owls boss Danny Rohl has identified the winger as a major target for the upcoming transfer window.

As things stand, Poveda’s contract with Leeds will expire at the end of the season, making him available on a free transfer.

However, Sheffield Wednesday’s attempts to sign the 24-year-old may not go as planned.

Other Championship clubs, as well as those from outside, are reportedly interested in Poveda ahead of the summer transfer window.

Having joined Leeds from Manchester City back in the January 2020 transfer window, Poveda has since made 30 appearances in all competitions for the Elland Road club.

He has also previously had spells out on loan in the Championship with the likes of Blackburn Rovers and Blackpool.

While Sheffield Wednesday’s season is now done with Championship survival secured, Leeds’ third place finish in the second-tier means they are now preparing for the play-offs.

Their first game of that campaign sees them travel to Carrow Road to face manager Daniel Farke’s former club Norwich City on Sunday afternoon.

A permanent move for Poveda appears to be a viable option for the Owls.

Despite his injury history, the winger was frequently a star performance for Rohl’s team in the second part of the season.

That might make him a valuable asset at Hillsborough if he can stay healthy and available throughout the season.

It therefore makes sense for them to try to bring him back to the club, in a deal that would undoubtedly improve the morale among the Sheffield Wednesday faithful even more, following the achievement of that extraordinary run to safety under Rohl.

Poveda might be available on a free transfer, which would also make this a sensible move, given the fact it would cost them nothing in terms of a fee, leaving funds available to invest in other signings as well.

Aside from that, outside interest might turn this into a coup for Sheffield Wednesday if they can pull it done.

The winger seemed to have enjoyed and flourished during his time at Hillsborough, so a return to the club would undoubtedly appeal to him.

As a result, it’s easy to see why Rohl appears to desire a reunion with Poveda at the top of Sheffield Wednesday’s agenda this summer.
