Danny Röhl has somehow given Sheffield Wednesday a fighting chance of staying in the Championship after the club made an abysmal start to the 2023/24 campaign under Xisco Muñoz.
It’s an achievement in itself that the club aren’t dead and buried already, instead they find themselves in 22nd place, just three points away from safety.
Championship table – 09/01/24 | |||

Club | P | GD | Pts |
20. Birmingham City | 26 | -11 | 28 |
21. Huddersfield Town | 26 | -18 | 25 |

24. Rotherham United | 26 | -26 | 18 |
The club made their worst ever start to a season, failing to win in their first 13 league games, only recording their first victory on the 29th October. With this in mind, it’s quite remarkable that we’re now into January and the club are just three points off safety.
It’s not often a side can be content with their league position whilst in the relegation zone, but Wednesday supporters may be quietly confident that they can pull of an unlikely survival bid this season.
However, clubs may be looking at the job Röhl has done with the Owls this season with interest. After all, it takes a very good manager to do what the German has done at Hillsborough.
Danny Röhl’s spell as Sheffield Wednesday boss
The 34-year-old was appointed as Owls boss in mid-October and has made a big impact. He suffered two defeats to Watford and Plymouth in his first two games before recording a crucial 2-0 victory over local rivals and fellow basement boys Rotherham United in his first home game.
This proved the catalyst for Wednesday and despite a winless November, they managed to pick up a point against runaway leaders Leicester City before embarking on a successful December which saw them win four games to help keep them in touch with safety.
It’s been a fantastic start to the new year for the Owls. A big 3-1 win against Hull City on New Year’s Day was followed up by a 4-0 battering of Cardiff City in the FA Cup, leading to genuine optimism that the club could somehow survive relegation this season.
