Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper who turned down contract offer

James Beadle is the team’s number one right now, and many would contend that he’s been among the finest Owls number one in a while.

Despite the occasional slip-up, he has been reliable, keeping six clean sheets in 17 Championship games for Wednesday since joining on loan from Brighton in January.

He’s moved. After a difficult first half of the season, Cameron Dawson, a graduate of the Owls programme, is in goal.

Sheffield Wednesday facing goalkeeper crisis

Additionally, Sheffield Wednesday has a bit of a custodian dilemma heading into the summer.

Beadle’s loan agreement is about to expire, and Dawson is expected to go Hillsborough when his contract does as well.

Pierce Charles, an impressive but untested goalie, is the lone goalkeeper on the first squad signed for the upcoming season.

Thus, Danny Rohl will undoubtedly need to add one or two goalkeepers during the summer transfer window.

However, a former custodian for Sheffield Wednesday, who was let go by the team two years ago, is currently vying for a Golden Glove.

Joe Wildsmith impressing with Derby County in League One

Joe Wildsmith is a name that Sheffield Wednesday fans will remember well.

The Sheffield-born stopped is another who rose through the ranks in S6 and into the first-team, eventually making 88 total first-team appearances for Sheffield Wednesday.

But after featuring just three times in the 2021/22 League One season, Wildsmith would leave Wednesday as a free agent after rejecting a new contract offer.

He then joined Derby County and went on to feature 46 times in League One last season, and 39 times this season where he’s recorded a staggering 19 clean sheets.

He’s currently tied for the Golden Glove with Lincoln City goalkeeper Lukas Jensen, with Derby now just one game away from promotion to the Championship.
