Sheffield Wednesday traveled to the MKM Stadium and defeated Hull 2-0 to make amends for last weekend’s disappointing stalemate with Cardiff City.
Danny Rohl’s team had a dominant night and likely should have scored many more goals, but goals from Josh Windass and Michael Smith gave them all three points.
Although the well-deserved victory puts the Owls in a strong position going into Sunday’s match against Derby, Rohl will now need to change up his starting lineup.
Due to Di’Shon Bernard’s fifth yellow card of the season and subsequent one-match suspension, Wednesday will be without their star defender when they play Derby.
Bernard’s recent performances have garnered him accolades, especially following his goal against Cardiff on Saturday.
However, after a few weeks of balancing on a suspension, the center-half’s luck has now run out.
In the 69th minute of the victory over Hull, Bernard was booked for a professional foul after pulling down Abdulkadir Omur as a counterattack began to gather steam.
Even though Rohl will always be saddened by losing a major member of the starting XI, Dominic Iorfa is a more than suitable substitute.
Although the tall defender had been a mainstay in the starting lineup until the match against Cardiff, Rohl now seems to favor a back three consisting of Yan Valery, Bernard, and the returning Max Lowe.
Iorfa’s physical presence and poise with the ball will be crucial against Derby County, and he should have no trouble moving into the middle of the defense.
With Valery displaying his long passing skills and Max Lowe now considered a “vital” player for Wednesday, the Owls defense’s balance should be ideal to deal with a Rams side that are struggling to penetrate in the final third.
Sheffield Wednesday has now won three of their previous four away league games, and Danny Rohl’s team has risen to 12th place in the Championship standings.
Hull City didn’t have a good night. However, Josh Windas scored from the penalty spot and Michael Smith added a second late in the game as the Owls successfully attacked and defended.
James Beadle, the goalkeeper for Sheffield Wednesday, was praised by Lee Bullen after the game for keeping the Owls in the match with a few outstanding saves in the first half.
In other news, Sheffield Wednesday, who could have won the match by three or four goals in the end, had Barry Bannan playing brilliantly in midfield.
For the traveling Sheffield Wednesday, it turned out to be an unforgettable evening.
