The Owls looked destined to make an immediate return to League One after a disastrous start to the season under Xisco Munoz, but they achieved safety after a remarkable turnaround under Danny Rohl as they finished 20th in the table.
Wednesday supporters were worried that Rohl would leave the team this summer, but the German recently signed a long-term contract at Hillsborough, so the next three months may be busy for him as he attempts to reassemble his team.
While Ciaran Brennan, Reece James, George Byers, Tyreeq Bakinson, Juan Delgado, and Lee Gregory were released at the conclusion of their contracts, loanees James Beadle, Kristian Pedersen, Jeff Hendrick, Momo Diaby, Ian Poveda, Ike Ugbo, and Ashley Fletcher returned to their parent clubs.Liam Palmer and Barry Bannan have renewed their contracts with the Owls, but Josh Windass and Cameron Dawson have reportedly chosen not to sign, and Will Vaulks declined the club’s offer of a contract to play for newly promoted Oxford United.
Ex-Southampton man set to sign
Wednesday are working to complete the signing of Angers defender Yan Valery before the end of the week.
The Owls faced competition from Montpellier and Standard Liege for Valery, but they are set to win the race for his signature after agreeing a deal with Angers, with only the finer details still to be sorted.
Valery provided five assists in 37 appearances in all competitions for Angers this season to help them to promotion to the French top flight as they finished second in Ligue 2, and he is no stranger to English football having previously played for Southampton, where he worked with Wednesday boss Rohl, and Birmingham City.
The Tunisia international stated to 90 Football earlier this month, “Actually, I have become English,” indicating that he is eager to get back to England. I instantly sense the serenity and style of life that I myself like when I travel to England. I would jump at the chance to return to England.”
It appears likely that he will receive that chance, and in the next few days, he might be revealed as the Owls’ third summer addition.
Duncan McGuire competition
Before Duncan McGuire joined Blackburn Rovers in January, Wednesday was embroiled in a convoluted chase of the striker from Orlando City; however, his move to Ewood Park was derailed by an administrative blunder.
According to The Athletic, the Owls have rekindled their interest in McGuire this summer. However, Serie A teams are also rumored to be monitoring the USA international.
It’s unclear which Italian teams are planning a move for McGuire, but Torino has been connected to him in the past, and Wednesday may find it difficult to match the money offered by his Serie A pursuers.
McGuire has scored six goals in 17 appearances in all competitions for Orlando City during the current MLS season, and his form does not seem to have been affected by his failed Blackburn move.
Cameron Humphreys blow
Football Insider reports that Wednesday, Millwall, Queens Park Rangers, and Swansea City are among the teams interested in signing Rotherham United defender Cameron Humphreys this summer.
Despite not being able to stop Rotherham from being relegated to League One, Humphreys made 27 appearances for the Millers in all competitions this season due to injuries. When healthy, he was one of the team’s best players.
The 25-year-old defender has one year left on his deal at New York Stadium. While there have been rumors that Rotherham may try to trade for him this summer, manager Steve Evans has played down those rumors.
Evans told the Rotherham Advertiser, “If he’s mentioned with Wednesday, then I’m not surprised if he’s mentioned with Thursday and Friday as well.”
“Cameron has been really good for me in the three games he’s played but we are not aware of any interest from any club.”
