Sheffield Wednesday player ratings from heavy Plymouth Argyle loss as rut continues

How Yorkshire Live rated the Wednesday players in tonight’s 3-0 reversal down at Home Danny Röhl’sPark as  side remain rock-bottom of the Championship

Sheffield Wednesday’s miserable winless start to the season continued with a sobering 3-0 defeat away at Plymouth Argyle. The loss means the Owls remain rock-bottom of the second tier with just three points from 13 league matches.

The visitors started brightly with Anthony Musaba and Josh Windass both catching the eye. But after Argyle’s early warning sign when Finn Azaz hit a post was not heeded. A terrific free-kick from Mustapha Bundu hit the crossbar on its way into the net. As if that wasn’t hard enough to take, the hosts doubled the lead on the stroke of half-time through Morgan Whittaker after a defensive mix-up between Pol Valentin and Dom Iorfa.

Sub Ryan Hardie added gloss in the second half, leaving new Wednesday boss Danny Röhl with plenty of posers even this early into his reign.

Here’s how Yorkshire Live rated the Wednesday players down in Devon.

Had no chance with the free-kick opener. Likewise the second goal wasn’t his fault. Made a competent stop second half but overall it was one to forget.

Report | Watford 1-0 Wednesday - News - Sheffield Wednesday

Pol Valentin 3

Was solid enough until a calamitous error that gifted Whittaker the ball to easily slot home Argyle’s crucial second goal. Tried to make inroads down the right wing second half but to no avail.

Dominic Iorfa 4

At fault for the second due to a total miscommunication with Valentin. Did look solid other than that and racked up five clearances.

Bambo Diaby 4

Took a blow to the head/face in the first half and had to go off for almost five minutes. One of many who couldn’t live with Plymouth’s lively attackers.

Akin Famewo 5

Was switched on at left-back. Put in an early sliding challenge to set the tempo and racked up most interceptions of any Wednesday player.

Barry Bannan 4

Couldn’t impose himself on the contest. Made four key passes despite being largely low-key.

George Byers 4

Back into the starting XI but too many unforced errors. Did the dirty side of things well up until an awful decision that led to Plymouth’s third goal.

John Buckley 5

Slalomed past players plenty but couldn’t drive forward and make things happen. Hooked at the break.

Josh Windass 4

Another game where he was busy but lacked any end product at all. Too many efforts wide or over – had just two on target from his five attempts.

Anthony Musaba 5

Was lively but all too often his end product is severly lacking. Numerous examples here of that but he was arguably the player who looked most likely to spark some creativity.

Lee Gregory 4

Back in the starting XI for his 100th appearance in blue-and-white. Had a few sniffs, but put an effort over the bar when well-placed first half.

Substitutes :

Michael Smith (For Buckley, 46) 3

Never had a sniff. Isolated for large periods.

Djeidi Gassama (For Musaba, 65) 4

Injected pace but still very raw.

Mallik Wilks (For Gregory, 65) 4

Brighter than his cameo at Watford. Glanced a header wide from a corner

Jeff Hendrick (For Bannan, 77) N/A

Will Vaulks (For Byers, 77) N/A

Unused subs : Vasquez, Palmer, Bernard, James.
