Sheffield Wednesday signed ‘brilliant’ Championship man who cost £750k

Former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Carlton Palmer wants to see the Owls sign this Championship star in the summer.

Sheffield Wednesday will undoubtedly require new players to enter Hillsborough Stadium this summer.

Once again, owner Dejphon Chansiri has allowed nearly half of his first-team players to be out of contract in the summer or nearing the conclusion of their loan periods.

It will leave Danny Rohl or his replacement with a massive pre-season rebuilding work and yet another shoestring budget, if there is one at all.

Expect the Owls to loot both the free market and the lending market.

However, if Sheffield Wednesday avoids relegation, Chansiri may be willing to invest some money to keep Rohl happy in S6.

Carlton Palmer urges Dejphon Chansiri to make one summer transfer

Speaking to Football League World in a recent interview, former Owls footballer and now commentator Palmer advised Chansiri to sign Rotherham United custodian Viktor Johansson this summer.

Palmer said:

“There are many Premier League clubs interested in him, but would Johansson be first choice? I doubt it.

“He should aim to be a first-team custodian. He does not want to sit on the bench, thus he should not shift to a position where he would be a second choice.

“Should Sheffield Wednesday retain their Championship status, that would be a feasible possibility for him, along with Sheffield United.

“He’ll have a lot of clubs after him. Would he be a good fit for either Sheffield club? Absolutely. Whoever signs Johansson will have a very, very good keeper.

Who is Viktor Johansson

Johansson, 25, is the first choice custodian for Sheffield Wednesday’s South Yorkshire rivals Rotherham United.

He just had his side demoted to League One, but Johansson has gained accolades this season, presently leading the Championship in saves (175, with John Ruddy in second on 141).

Despite only four clean sheets, the Swedish international has stood out in an otherwise dismal Rotherham team.

According to recent sources, Sheffield United is interested in Johansson, who has a release clause of £750,000.

Former Millers manager Paul Warne referred to Johansson as a ‘great’ custodian.

Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper crisis

Sheffield Wednesday appear to need at least one new custodian this summer.

And the Owls may require an experienced no.1 like Johansson, with Cameron Dawson out of contract and expected to leave, and James Beadle poised to return to parent club Brighton.

As Palmer suggests, Johansson may believe that another Championship move is his best option, and if he’s settled at Rotherham, a move to Hillsborough may be ideal.

However, he may feel that he should be playing higher up the second tier table next season; the Owls appear to be struggling again, even if they avoid relegation.

Furthermore, Sheffield Wednesday paying £750k for one player this summer, when a horde would be required, appears implausible.
