Sheffield Wednesday signs contract for former Premier League man after Burnley pursuit incident

Journalist Alan Nixon claims on Patreon that Sheffield Wednesday is interested in Vancouver Whitecaps player Stuart Armstrong.
This winter, Sheffield Wednesday may attempt to entice the former Premier League player to return to England. Although he presently plays for the Vancouver Whitecaps in Major League Soccer, SWFC is keeping an eye on him.
In September, 32-year-old Armstrong moved to Canada and signed a two-year contract. Since then, he has made 11 appearances across all competitions, with two goals and two assists.

The Owls are interested in acquiring him, according to reporter Nixon’s most recent update on his Patreon. Earlier last month, the same source said that Burnley, a Championship team, were also fans.

Over the weekend, Sheffield Wednesday defeated QPR 2-0 on the road after goals by Michael Smith and Callum Paterson to boost their play-off push. They are sat in 10th in the table and are three points off the top six.

Sheffield Wednesday eye Stuart Armstrong
Sheffield Wednesday could see Armstrong as someone to inject some more quality into their ranks.

The Scotland international would also bring some experience into their squad and would be a useful player to have in and around the dressing room.

After signing him, Vancouver Whitecaps’ sporting director Axel Schuster said, as per BBC Sport: “He is a player who has excelled for many years at the highest levels in the United Kingdom, as well as internationally with Scotland.

“He brings experience, tactical awareness, positional flexibility, and a very high work rate. In addition, his passing range and elite chance creation from the midfield position will add another dimension to our team’s overall attack.”

He had a trial at Brentford last year after cutting ties with Southampton, as per the Daily Mail.

Armstrong started out at Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Dundee United before Celtic snapped him up in 2015.

He became a key player for the Hoops before being lured away from Glasgow by Southampton. He linked up with the Saints in 2018 and went on to become a good servant to the Hampshire outfit.

The Inverness-born man played 214 matches and chipped in with 25 goals.

What now for Sheffield Wednesday target Stuart Armstrong?
Sheffield Wednesday could hand him a route back into English football but may need to see off competition from Burnley.

The 2024 MLS campaign is over and the Owls would be able to offer Armstrong some game time.
