Sheffield Wednesday striker target now ‘on his way’ for medical’

Orlando City and USMNT striker McGuire, 22, flew to the UK yesterday to try and push through a move to Sheffield Wednesday’s Championship rivals Blackburn Rovers.

It came after Rovers seemingly beat the Owls to a deal for the striker, who scored 15 goals in all competitions for Orlando in 2023.

But then it looked like a move to Ewood Park fell through and McGuire subsequently travelled to Sheffield to push through a move to Hillsborough.

Then, in another turn, it was revealed that talks between McGuire and Blackburn had reopened, and now Alan Myers has revealed on X that the striker is set to begin his Blackburn Rovers medical:

This is devastating news for Sheffield Wednesday.

Danny Rohl will be gutted that he now appears set to miss out on a key transfer targets, and so close to tonight’s 11pm transfer deadline as well.

Fans will hope that Rohl and owner Dejphon Chansiri have a few tricks up their sleeve with the Owls still in desperate need of a striker signing in the final hours of the transfer window.

As for McGuire, it seemed like Blackburn was his preference all along, despite reports stating otherwise, with the player originally flying to the UK to seal a move to Lancashire.

And now, barring any last-minute roadblocks and such, he appears ready to make that move.

Sheffield Wednesday must move on from this setback. They will have an extremely tough task in the second half of this season if they can’t get someone through the Hillsborough doors by 11 p.m.

The Championship’s pivotal game against Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town is scheduled for later this week; Sheffield Wednesday now has a seven-point cushion to safety.
