Sheffield Wednesday were ‘interested’ in Norwich City star

Sheffield Wednesday take on Norwich City in the Championship on Tuesday night.

Sheffield Wednesday welcome top six hopefuls Norwich City to Hillsborough for what should be an enthralling game in the Championship.

The Owls enter this match fresh off a much-needed victory and a much-better showing in their previous outing, a 2-0 success over QPR.

Danny Rohl witnessed his team gain all three points with two goals in the second half, while Norwich City defeated Ipswich Town 1-0 to secure a significant victory last time out.

The Canaries have won four of their past five games and are presently ranked sixth.

David Wagner discusses Danny Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday

Before the anticipated pivotal game on Tuesday night, Wagner made small talk about his fellow German Rohl.

Wagner continued by disclosing that he had already met Rohl and had spoken with him during the January transfer window.

“I am familiar with him. A few years ago, I had coffee with him in a hotel as well. We also kept in touch during the winter. We haven’t always talked about English football, but in the past we did when he showed interest in one of our players and asked my opinion.

Who did Danny Rohl want to sign at Norwich City?

Although there are several possible identities for this mysterious player, there is hard data that points to a specific player.

In January, Sheffield Wednesday required players for several roles.

With Ian Poveda, who may have started as a no. 10 but ultimately played out wider, coming down the middle and James Beadle and Ike Ugbo joining, they nearly gave themselves a new spine in the end.

And despite initial mixed assessments, January has turned out to be a productive window for Sheffield Wednesday.

Central midfield was one spot that required improvement but ultimately didn’t.

In what now seems like rash choices, Rohl permitted players like George Byers to go on loan and John Buckley to rejoin Blackburn Rovers.

Additionally, Sheffield Wednesday was linked to other midfielders, including Adam Forshaw of Norwich City.

According to reports from January, Forshaw was a fan favourite of Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday. He eventually signed a free transfer to play for Plymouth Argyle.

Additionally, Darko Gyabi, a January loan signing from Leeds United, was acquired by Plymouth before Wednesday.

Since then, Forshaw has made nine appearances for Plymouth, a team that has had a terrible season in 2024, losing manager Steven Schumacher and then firing Ian Foster.

The former Norwich player might also regret not joining Sheffield Wednesday if the Owls avoid dropping out, as a victory over Norwich City would allow the Owls to move up to 19th place and pass Plymouth.
