Sheffield Wednesday’s forgotten star makes return

It’s been almost exactly six months since Juan Delgado last played for Sheffield Wednesday…
The Chilean has had a challenging first season in England. He was the team’s first summer signing and had a major role in the early part of the season under Xisco before suffering a hip injury that required surgery and kept him out of the game for a long time.

He made a significant advancement towards his return to senior action on Monday when he was selected to start for the U21s against Swansea City at S6. He played a solid first half before being scheduled for a halftime substitution, having played 45 minutes for the first time this season.

Wednesday dominated play for extended stretches of time following Filip Lissah’s early dismissal as the Swans captain; nevertheless, they were unable to convert any of their chances or possession into points because Evans Watts was mainly untested in the opposing goal. There were many of balls into the box, but the Owls couldn’t make any of them matter, and that ultimately came back to bother them.
Before the final game, a point would have been sufficient to move them up to second place in the Professional Development League standings, but Kygell Wilson’s late break allowed Malik Cadogan to poke the ball past Pierce Charles to make it 1-0. The clock at that moment read 88 minutes.
Now, with Birmingham City playing Bournemouth this evening, their hopes of finishing in the top two could be dashed. Andy Holdsworth and his team are hoping to drop points and at least give the Owls a chance to pass them when they play Ipswich Town on May 3rd, the final game of the season.
