When Sheffield Wednesday’s crushing Championship loss to the Black Cats at Hillsborough on Friday night, a supporter surprisingly put up a picture of sad Sunderland fan Bradley Lowery.
Sheffield Wednesday has apologized and joined up with South Yorkshire Police to conduct an inquiry after a fan unexpectedly displayed a picture of Bradley Lowery during their team’s loss to Sunderland.
On Saturday, a photo that appeared to show a fan in the away section of Hillsborough holding up a picture of Lowery and smiling with another fan went viral on social media. In a statement released on Saturday afternoon, Sheffield Wednesday said: “We are aware of the photos circulating and have immediately commenced an inquiry alongside South Yorkshire Police.
“We categorically reject this terrible and wholly abhorrent behavior. We can only express our regret for the unquestionable grief this has caused Bradley’s family and friends.
Sunderland AFC has also been contacted by Mirror Football for comment. As he battled neuroblastoma, a rare form of cancer, Lowery won over the hearts of the Sunderland fans.
He became the club’s mascot and forged a heartfelt friendship with former England striker Jermain Defoe. Gemma, his mother, began a fundraising effort to raise the money Bradley would need to receive treatment in the United States.
Before the child’s tragic death in July 2017, approximately £1.3 million had been raised for him. Defoe gave Lowery a heartfelt eulogy upon his passing.
“Goodbye my friend, gonna miss you a lot,” he wrote. I’m so grateful that God allowed you into my life and blessed me with some incredible times with you. I’m really grateful for it.
“I’ll never forget the true affection in those adorable eyes you had for me when I first met you. I really struggle to put into words how much you mean to me.
A foundation was subsequently established in his honor to aid other people afflicted by the illness. Some Sheffield Wednesday supporters created a GoFundMe page for the Bradley Lowery Foundation in response to the incident on Friday.
The bottom-placed Championship team has had a difficult season and had yet another dreadful Hillsborough experience. During the Owls’ most recent loss, a very small proportion of supporters behaved in this way.
