The dream start to Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday’s incredible turnaround, which came from a terrible start under Munoz to a great conclusion, guaranteed survival in the Championship.
Tom Cannon, the star striker who the Owls sorely need goals from as they rebuild, may be available on the transfer market.
Michael Smith, a striker who has played little this season, is probably going to leave on Wednesday and may sign with other teams soon.

It was an excellent end to the season for Sheffield Wednesday as they secured survival in the Championship.

After defeating Barnsley in the play-off final at Wembley in May of last year, the Owls were promoted from League One and appeared certain to return right away to the third division.

After Wednesday’s worst-ever season opener, which led to Xisco Munoz’s firing in October, the team’s play and record took a big turn for the better under Danny Rohl.

The Owls, who finished 20th in the table, were among the best teams in the division in the second part of the season. They ensured their safety with a 2-0 victory over Sunderland on the last day of play.

Following their play-off final victory over Barnsley at Wembley in May of last year, the Owls were promoted from League One and seemed destined to go straight back down to the third division.

Following the worst-ever season opener on Wednesday, which resulted in Xisco Munoz’s dismissal in October, Danny Rohl’s team’s play and record saw a significant improvement.

Throughout the second half of the season, the Owls—who came in 20th place in the standings—were among the top teams in the division. On the final day of competition, they defeated Sunderland 2-0 to secure their safety.

In: Tom Cannon

Journalist Alan Nixon claims that Wednesday had first expressed interest in striker Tom Cannon in January of last year, but he ultimately joined Preston North End on loan from Everton.

Wednesday expressed interest in Cannon once more in the summer after he moved permanently to Leicester City for a fee of £7.5 million. Cannon has eight goals and one assist in 21 appearances during his short stay at Deepdale.

Cannon didn’t make his Foxes debut until December due to an injury, but it appeared as though he was settling in after he scored three goals in two games against Millwall and Huddersfield Town in early January.

But Cannon found it difficult to break into the starting lineup; in the last two months of the campaign, he only made one substitute appearance and was regularly left out of the matchday squad entirely.

Given his lack of playing time, Cannon’s long-term future at King Power Stadium is seriously called into doubt. If he does not play a significant amount in the Championship, it is unlikely that he will play a significant amount in the Premier League the following season.

There won’t be a lack of teams in the second division interested in signing Cannon on loan this summer, with Preston and Blackburn Rovers among those rumoured to be among them.

The Owls would probably only be able to finance a loan deal for Cannon, but he is the kind of player the team needs to make a big splash this summer in order to persuade Rohl to stay, and he might be the prolific goalscorer they sorely need.
