Update on Dominic Iorfa’s future at Sheffield Wednesday as defender nears end of contract

Dominic Iorfa, 29, sees his Sheffield Wednesday contract expire at the end of June, following the conclusion of his sixth season at Hillsborough.

The defender joined during the 2018/19 campaign and has since made 165 appearances for the Owls with five goals and five assists to his name.

Last season, Iorfa featured 28 times in the Championship, missing a large chunk midway through the campaign owing to injury.

Per the Sheffield Wednesday retained list, Iorfa was offered a new contract ahead of the 2024/25 season.

But the defender is yet to put pen-to-paper on a new deal and there remains ongoing uncertainty over whether or not he’ll be with Sheffield Wednesday next season.

The likes of Reece James, Lee Gregory, and Cameron Dawson have all moved on and joined new cubs as free agents.

Dominic Iorfa Sheffield Wednesday future discussed

Josh Windass has been the focus of a lot of recent talk about Sheffield Wednesday contracts; the striker is expected to become a free agent at the end of the month.

Di’Shon Bernard is also a source of uncertainty, and Liam Palmer and Barry Bannan have prolonged their spells at S6.

There is “no reason to believe,” according to a developing story from The Star, that negotiations between Sheffield Wednesday and the team “are not still live at this stage.”

This comes after Iorfa stated in March that he wasn’t really thinking about it at all when he talked about his future with Sheffield Wednesday, saying, “I’m settled here and I’m happy here.”

After recovering from my injuries, my main goal has been to reintegrate and support the team. That is what I am concentrating on. I’ll be pleased if he is offered a new contract, but I’m not really sure what to say you at this time.

Should Sheffield Wednesday keep Dominic Iorfa

Iorfa has certainly been a good servant for Sheffield Wednesday over the years, often times putting in good displays when avaialble.

But it’s not too often that Iorfa has been available for large periods at a time. The defender has struggled with injuries during his time in Sheffield.

Danny Rohl though is clearly keen for Iorfa to stay next season, given the fact that Sheffield Wednesday have offered him a new deal.

He remains a versatile player in defence, able to play in the middle or on the right, and his athleticism served him well in the more intense Rohl style of play.

The fact that he’s yet to sign a new deal may suggest that he’s keeping his options open. But The Star’s report also suggests that there’s still a definite chance that Iorfa stays this summer.
