Worrying Danny Rohl compensation claim made

Sheffield Wednesday have been in discussions with Danny Rohl since the conclusion of the 2023/24 season.

Owner Dejphon Chansiri is understandably eager to secure Rohl’s immediate and long-term future at Hillsborough, with talks apparently progressing positively.

It comes after Rohl guided the Owls to a 20th place finish in the 2023/24 Championship campaign, with interest from the likes of Hull City and Sunderland emerging.

The latest on Rohl’s contract is that he and Chansiri met in London to discuss further the possibility of a new contract, with those talks now thought to be nearing its conclusion.

But a new contract for Rohl will mean ‘adjustments’ to his current compensation package in S6.

Danny Rohl compensation at Sheffield Wednesday

It was recently revealed that a team would have to pay £5 million to sign Rohl away from Sheffield Wednesday.

And any team hoping to sign Rohl and his backroom staff on Wednesday would have to pay the Owls £10 million in compensation in addition to doubling that sum.

The existing contract for Rohl ends at the end of the 2024–2025 campaign, however ‘adjustments’ to his current compensation provision would be necessary for a new agreement.

Journalist Rob Staton of the BBC said on Football Heaven that Wednesday is attempting to reach an agreement with their management on a long-term contract.

Staton went on, “This would include adjustments to compensation if it is done, which would be good news for all concerned.”

Sheffield Wednesday need to strike a balance in Danny Rohl contract

While it would be devastating to lose all of the personnel or just Rohl, Chansiri would benefit greatly from the £5 million that Rohl, or £10 million for Rohl and his backroom team at Sheffield Wednesday, would receive.

And that cash may be very effectively spent on players in the transfer market, new recruits for the backroom staff, and possibly even the discovery of another Rohl.

It appears as though teams have been discouraged from potentially taking a chance on Rohl this summer by his £5 million price tag.

However, there’s a good probability that clubs will want to sign Rohl away from Sheffield Wednesday if that number is drastically reduced.

Therefore, Chansiri and the team must find a balance. While keeping Rohl’s contract extended is obviously the primary goal, the team also needs to consider making sure that Rohl’s departure from the team isn’t too easy for competitor teams to accomplish.

However, if Rohl is aware that there will be a big compensation cost and that he will be largely trapped at Hillsborough should things go wrong, he might not commit to his long-term future.
