Sunderland first choice on appointing Danny Rohl emerges in managerial shortlist

Danny Rohl is being considered as a potential replacement to Michael Beale at Sunderland

As Sunderland searches for a new head coach, Danny Rohl is one of the players on their radar.

The Black Cats are considering whether to pursue the Sheffield Wednesday manager, according to i News.

Since taking over in October, the German has received a lot of praise for his work with the Owls.

Following the decision to part ways with Michael Beale in February, Sunderland is currently looking for a new head coach. The next appointment is expected to take up the position in the summer.

As the Wearside team looks to take their time selecting a replacement for Beale, Mike Dodds has been given caretaker leadership until the conclusion of the season.

In recent weeks, several names have been connected to the opening at the Stadium of Light, with Rohl being the most recent to surface.

Will Still, the manager of Reims, is also on the short list of possible candidates. The Championship team tried to hire the 31-year-old before Beale arrived in December.

Still has earned a lot of praise for his work in France with Ligue 1 side Reims, with his team challenging for qualification to European competition for next season. An unnamed Belgian coach has also been mentioned as a potential replacement to Beale, although the second tier side is still working on background checks before making a more concrete approach. The likes of Paul Heckingbottom and Steve Cooper have also been linked, with both managers currently out of work after leaving Sheffield United and Nottingham Forest earlier this season.

With the side near the bottom of the Championship table, Rohl assumed command at Hillsborough in October.

Despite most people writing off the team’s chances of staying in the second tier because of their dismal start to the season under Xisco Munoz, the German has supervised a climb to put them into survival contention.

In his 30 games as manager, Rohl has won 12, and his team is currently one point away from safety.

Regardless of who is named head coach, Sunderland will be hopeful that he or she can guide the team to Premier League promotion.

The Black Cats’ goal for this season was to finish in the top six, but their recent performance has all but eliminated any chance of making the playoffs.

The team has not received any of its previous seven league games, and Dodds’ team is currently ranked 12th overall.

Given how effectively Rohl has performed with Sheffield Wednesday in such a short period of time, his departure in the summer would be a severe blow to the team.

Relegation to League One, though, might make him think about his future because, for the 34-year-old, staying in the Championship with Sunderland would be a clear step ahead.

Without a sure, Rohl would be an intriguing addition to Sunderland, especially given their emphasis on development and the fact that he is a very talented, up-and-coming young coach similar to Still.

Even if Sheffield Wednesday stays in the second level, a move to the Stadium of Light may be highly alluring because it’s evident the Wearside team has the desire and most likely the resources to compete in the Premier League in the near future.
