Shrewsbury boss Matt Taylor has outlined his plans for the January window and has admitted that the club have had a few close calls in regards to new signings.
Taylor is still looking to get off of the mark in January, with the club yet to make a signing this window. As a result, Salop have begun to fall behind their competitors with a slight blip in form in recent weeks.
Despite scoring a league-low 17 goals in 26 games so far this season, Shrewsbury currently sit in 15th in the table. Although they are by no means safe from a relegation battle, Taylor’s side do currently have a seven-point buffer to the relegation places.
It is fairly obvious that the forward areas are a position which need to be improved this January, but Taylor is yet to address that issue. With Daniel Udoh and Ryan Bowman the current top scorers with four goals in the league apiece, they’re crying out for a proven League One goalscorer.
There are plenty of options currently available but Salop may struggle in bidding wars with fellow League One competitors. With the teams around them strengthening already in the window, Taylor will be wanting to get the ball rolling as soon as possible to prevent being dragged into the relegation battle.
When speaking to the Shropshire Star about his plans for the window, Taylor emphasised that the club were doing everything they can to get some names through the door.
“It is not for lack of effort, it is not for lack of work. What it is, is that those players have not dropped yet.
“We have had numerous Zoom conversations with players that maybe we have lost out to other teams, that is part and parcel of what is the transfer window and there is nothing we can do about it.
“Will we continue to work hard? Yes, Micky (Moore) and I are in constant dialogue so January is a busy time.”
“I have said it before with good players there is normally one or two or three clubs in for them.
“All we can do is be open be honest be transparent with those players, and then it is their decision where they see themselves wanting to play football.

Shrewsbury surprisingly still find themselves in mid-table despite their poor form in front of goal. At points the club have rode their luck in games this season and it could be perceived that they are somewhat fortunate to be in the position they are in.
With all of the teams below them strengthening in January, Taylor will be under a slight bit of pressure to bring some new faces to the club. A seven-point buffer to the relegation places is significant at this stage, but it is by no means enough to keep them out of the fight. If a proven goalscorer is not brought in this January, then they could fall down the table and potentially be involved in the relegation fight near the end of the season.
