The experienced attacker Tom Burgess has signed with the Huddersfield Giants for a three-year contract that begins in 2025. The 31-year-old has played with his brothers Sam, Luke, and George with the South Sydney Rabbitohs for more than ten years, totaling over 200 appearances for the team.
However, the Giants have announced that Burgess, a Dewsbury native, will be going back to his home country to play in the Super League starting in 2019.
The formidable prop stated, “I feel really good about getting it all sorted and obviously I have been looking at potentially coming back to the Super League for the last few years, but no I’ve been really fortunate to get in touch with Huddersfield, we came to an agreement.” However, the prop has now re-signed with Souths until the end of the season.
An incredible career with the Rabbitohs, which included a 30-6 triumph against the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs in the 2014 NRL Grand Final, will come to an end with the move next year. Just the previous season, Burgess experienced triumph as well, taking home the NRL State Championship and the New South Wales Cup. However, the 6’5″, 120 kg beast is excited to be going back to his hometown.
“One thing I am really excited about coming back to Huddersfield, it’s really close to where I grew up, where I went to school, and it’s going to be really cool to come back to where it all began with a great club like Huddersfield Giants,” the former front-rower for the Bradford Bulls stated.
The England star, though, is adamant that he is not going back to his playing roots to retire and call it a day. Instead, Burgess is eager to win some trophies during his three-year Giants contract.
“What I want to do over in England is perfect; I want to go over there and win silverware,” he declared. I’m not returning to complete my career or make up numbers. With Bradford, I never quite made it. Although we had a strong team in the beginning, we were never able to push through to the postseason and take the lead. Thus, one quality I look for in a club is that I want to get there, reach the finals, and return the cutlery to the Rugby League’s original home.
