3 actions Southampton take in the January transfer window

Southampton have hit a run of form which has seen them mount a charge on the division’s top two. They currently sit in 4th and eight points behind 2nd-placed Ipswich Town, and will seemingly look to the January window to close the gap.

In order to strengthen Russell Martin’s squad, Southampton added four permanent first-team players in the summer: Ryan Manning, Shea Charles, Joe Lumley, and Ross Stewart. On loan from Premier League clubs, Flynn Downes, Ryan Fraser, Mason Holgate, and Taylor Harwood-Bellis joined them.

The Saints will try to build on their successful recruiting thus far this season when the January window opens next month. Southampton needs to take these three transfer steps in January.

Hold onto Bazunu
Bazunu only started at St. Mary’s at the beginning of the previous season, but he’s already being connected to a move out. Everton and Tottenham Hotspur are rumoured to be interested, so it’s possible that an exit is imminent.

Martin is aware of the 21-year-old’s importance, and even though they have summer signing Joe Lumley and Alex McCarthy on their roster, both would be a big step down from the Republic of Ireland international, so it would seem necessary to keep him.

reinforcements for strikers
Carlos Alcaraz, 21, is expected to lead the line and score goals because of the injury records of both Stewart and Che Adams this season. But despite making 16 appearances in the Championship, the young Argentine has yet to score any goals.

The Saints may be able to get closer to the top two if Adams and Stewart are able to overcome their injuries. However, in order to lessen the burden on Alcaraz and the previously mentioned injury-plagued pair, they might have to look into the market for an accomplished star.

Walker-Peters will remain
One of Southampton’s best players from the previous campaign, Kyle Walker-Peters has been crucial to the team’s success thus far this year. Being an England international, he has the ability to succeed in the elite league if given the chance. However, this is the reason it is crucial that Martin holds onto the right-back after the January transfer window.

The Saints manager told The Daily Echo that he is sure the 26-year-old will stay at St Mary’s, but he acknowledged that he wouldn’t be shocked to see him linked to Premier League teams. Walker-Peters will have contributed significantly to their success if they are promoted this season.
