As Southampton heads to the West Midlands tonight, head coach Russell Martin has disclosed that the return of both Flynn Downes and Che Adams might provide a boost to his team.
The Saints had been playing brilliantly in the Championship, going 25 games without a loss before Tuesday night’s 3-1 loss to Bristol City put a stop to their winning run. The remarkable run that began back in September with a 3-1 victory over promotion rivals Leeds United at the St. Mary’s Stadium was brought to an end by three goals in the second half for the Robins.
Prior to the midweek outcome, Southampton was occupying the final automatic promotion spot. Daniel Farke’s Whites, on the other hand, had been winning seven straight games since the beginning of the year, and they had managed to move up into second position.
Martin’s team now has to contend with another challenging road game at The Hawthorns this evening. With 31 goals surrendered in 31 games, West Bromwich Albion has the third-best defensive record in England’s second division and has won three of their past five league games.
