Southampton midfielder Carlos ‘Charly’ Alcaraz has admitted he was left surprised by the support following relegation, as they would have been burning cars back in Argentina.
The young player has been discussing his career to date, including his relegation with Southampton last season, with the YouTube channel Ezzequiel.
In January of this year, he signed a €13.65 million contract to join the Saints from Racing, and in the second half of the season, he rapidly made a name for himself.
He was unable to keep Southampton in the Premier League, though, as they ultimately finished bottom with 25 points, 11 points from safety. This was despite some very strong performances.
It was a disappointing way to end a disastrous campaign for Southampton, who had multiple managers and never seemed to have a chance of staying in the league.
After spending two years in League One and five years in the Championship, their 11-year tenure in the Premier League came to an end with their eventual relegation.
Naturally, it was a very disappointing moment for all those involved, but Alcaraz acknowledges that he was taken aback by the utterly different response compared to what is typical in his native country.
He declared, “It has no comparison.”
We were unfortunate enough to be demoted here, but we were encouraged by the public’s support. They were in our company.
When a club in Argentina folds, all of the players die. They sing to you, break your pitch, and would have set fire to your cars.
