Southampton test Leeds United nerve with January transfer offer

Southampton’s potential pursuit of a Leeds United January transfer makes a lot of sense

In order for Southampton to catch up to Leicester City and Ipswich Town and potentially advance, they must have a strong start to 2024.
Due to Mason Holgate’s possible departure, Southampton may require a new signing to make up for their defensive deficiencies.
Charlie Cresswell is a young, talented defender who could be Southampton’s long-term answer, so the team should try to sign him.

However, the Saints will need to start 2024 strong in order to make up the ground required to pass Leicester City and Ipswich Town, who are currently atop the table.

After experiencing a dismal run of play in September, Russell Martin’s team has been remarkably stable and is on track to earn a sizable number of points.

If the Foxes and Kieran McKenna’s squad continue to perform at this level for the duration of the season, it might not be sufficient.

The south coast club might need to make some January transfers in order to stay up with even Leeds United in the event of a potential setback in January.

Mason Holgate’s loan from Everton to the second division team is scheduled to end in the new year, per Football Insider.

Holgate was a temporary addition to the team over the summer, but he hasn’t played much—he has only made five appearances for Martin’s squad.

Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Jan Bednarek have been the manager’s more consistent starters, but Holgate has been a reliable squad member for Leeds United.

However, Southampton’s defence would appear a little thin if the centre back were to leave.

Since the club captain has had trouble staying healthy this season, Jack Stephens would be their only other realistic option.

To provide this Southampton team with a safety net in case there are any more injury concerns, another signing would be required.

Leeds, a rival for promotion, could still be a part of the answer.

Going into the January transfer window, Charlie Cresswell is drawing a lot of interest. Teams like Middlesbrough are considering the 21-year-old.
