Southampton’s chances of permanent January deal for Newcastle United man emerge

Southampton boss Russell Martin has admitted the chances of a permanent deal for Newcastle United loanee Ryan Fraser this month are ‘low’.

Southampton recruited winger Fraser on loan from Newcastle United in the summer transfer window. He’d fallen far down the pecking order with the Magpies and moved on in a bid to find game time away from St. James’ Park.

The Scot has participated in all but one league game since his arrival, despite only starting four Championship games. In 23 games across all competitions, he has managed six goals and two assists. He made his FA Cup debut this past weekend against Walsall, marking his first start since November.

In the 4-0 victory over League Two opponents, Fraser scored two goals and provided an assist. Following the match, the loan player’s performance raised concerns about a long-term agreement.

However, Southampton manager Martin acknowledged—as cited by the Daily Echo—that a permanent agreement this month is unlikely, despite interest from both parties. He declared:

“I’m not sure; it’s really outside of my purview.

“Do you think I should make it permanent? Indeed. The opportunity

“We will see but I am pretty sure he would love to stay here beyond this season.”

A summertime one?
Even though the situation might not permit a permanent relocation this month, you can’t help but think that it would be possible in the summer. Fraser would be a viable addition if Southampton has the funds, but it may depend on how their promotion bid goes.

Eddie Howe does not see him playing for Newcastle United. With a year remaining on his contract, he’ll be returning to the northeast, so the Magpies will be happy to take Fraser’s wages and a fee off the books.

This season, Southampton has given Fraser some much-needed playing time, and if starting opportunities increase, you can’t help but think he’ll find the move to be very appealing. He has proven what he can do for Martin with his Walsall performance and his brace off the bench against Swansea City on Boxing Day, but it may be necessary to wait until the summer to sign a long-term contract.
