Man’s death after assault in St Helens sparks murder probe

The death of a man who was found unconscious in a Merseyside street is being treated as murder, police have said.

At before midnight on Thursday, the 33-year-old was discovered by police in Melling Avenue, close to Aintree Racecourse.

After being admitted to the hospital for treatment, he passed away.

The individual was “involved in an argument with three other men, which culminated in him being assaulted,” according to Merseyside Police.

In order to determine the reason behind the man’s death, a post-mortem examination is scheduled.

It was described as “a deeply shocking thing to happen in this community” by Det Ch Insp Andy O’Connor.

“The perpetrators must be held accountable since a man lost his life under violent circumstances.

Although we do not yet know why the victim was attacked, we do think that she was intended to be the target and possibly have known the offenders.”
