St Helens boss decries the state of his Saints team

Despite only having been head coach for a year, Paul Wellens of ST HELENS has acknowledged that he is still learning a lot on the job.

Saints are presently positioned just inside the top six, but if they fell out of that spot before the 2024 Super League concluded, it would mark the first time since the Merseyside club’s founding that they had not advanced to the summer playoffs.

Wellens, who succeeded Kristian Woolf, is rising to the challenge and trying to gain knowledge from it every single day.

“It’s all about how much information and various things you encounter every day,” Wellens explained.

The hardest thing for me to learn was how to decide what should come first, when to quit, and how to assign various jobs to different people in order to relieve pressure.

“Every day, I’m learning more about the management side of things. That is the most difficult aspect.

In addition to growing from those experiences, you also learn how to adjust and look for new and better ways to do tasks.

“I am enjoying and adjusting to this challenge.”

In order to continue as head coach for the 2025 Super League season, Wellens most recently inked a one-year contract. Lee Briers, a former Warrington Wolves star, will be joining Saints as an assistant.
