Work underway to relay Saints’ Totally Wicked Stadium pitch

NO sooner had last night’s game finished work was underway to relay the Saints pitch which has caused a number of problems, particularly with drainage over the years.

Saints do not have a home game now until 5 July when Castleford visit the Totally Wicked Stadium, but no time was being wasted in getting to work.

The posts were dismantled within 20 minutes of the final hooter and the turf began being ripped up this morning.

The pitch is getting upgraded as part of the deal with Liverpool FC Women, who will be playing their home fixtures at Saints from the start of the 2024/25 season.

As part of that a “new high-performance Premier League standard pitch” is being laid.

Coach Paul Wellens believes the upgrade will benefit his side and said: “It is getting ripped up and relayed.

“Obviously we’ve had issues and troubles with our pitch.

“When you have a good run of weather, it’s OK like it was tonight, but we have to obviously get it right for further down the track.

“Getting that done is going to be important for us and I like to think it’s going help us as well.

“We’re a team that likes to play on a on a firm track with the personnel we have, it suits the personnel within our team so hopefully we’ll see some signs of that when it does get laid down.”
