Conor McMenamin St Mirren absence explained as winger set for surgery

St Mirren winger Conor McMenamin will undergo surgery after a reoccurrence of a pre-existing injury.

The Northern Ireland internationalist did not travel to Spain with his team-mates due to a patella tendon issue.

McMenamin, 28, had played through the injury last season before being sidelined. He then returned to action in March where he helped the Buddies secure European football with a fifth-place finish in the Scottish Premiership.

However, after suffering a reoccurrence of the injury on international duty, McMenamin has missed pre-season as he prepares to go under the knife to correct the issue.

No timeline has been set for a return to action but with a UEFA Conference League second qualifying round tie around the corner, the injury comes as a significant blow to preparations.

Though McMenamin’s absence from the preseason tour to the Pinatar Arena raised questions about his future with the team, it is believed that the player was sidelined due to an injury.

Later this month, St Mirren will play in the UEFA competition against either Albanian team Vllaznia or Icelandic team Valur.

“St Mirren Football Club can confirm that Conor McMenamin will undergo surgery for a patella tendon injury,” the statement from the team read.

The 28-year-old had a pre-existing ailment that prevented him from playing through the pain barrier during the previous season, but it ultimately forced him to miss time. In order to contribute to our European qualifying, Conor went back into action in March.

“The forward from Northern Ireland returned from international service with a recurrence of the ailment, so he did not come to our preseason training camp in Spain.

“We wish Conor a full and speedy recovery.”
