Oxford United midfielder Oisin Smyth is poised to make a transfer switch to St Mirren.
The 24-year-old is expected to leave the newly-promoted Championship club to head north to Paisley.
Smyth – who featured 16 times for Oxford this season – began his career as a midfielder but played in central defence and right-back on occasion last term.
The former Dungannon Swifts player has been tipped to make the switch to St Mirren in a report in his homeland.
Smyth made an impression in Northern Ireland and signed with Oxford in 2022 for an undisclosed sum.
It’s believed that an agreement to have him depart Oxford for more playing time in Scotland is almost finalized.Smyth would have an opportunity to make an impression with the team in European play with St. Mirren the next season, and he might collaborate with Stephen Robinson and current assistant coach Diarmuid O’Carroll. Smyth is a former youth international for Northern Ireland.
Robinson has made use of his vast knowledge of the Northern Irish scene at St Mirren previously with Conor McMenamin and Caolan Boyd-Munce recent examples of players excelling in Paisley and becoming regular squad players for the national team.
Smyth fell out of favour at Oxford at the back end of the season and was not involved in the play-off final win over Bolton at Wembley earlier this month.
The midfielder did make the headlines earlier in the season, though, as a wonderstrike against Charlton won a goal of the season award.
Smyth – utilised in defence for the match – drove forward before launching a stunning effort into the top corner from all of 30 yards.
