But hopes are higher ahead of the 2024/25 season after Michael Skubala got the Imps to within touching distance of the top six last time around.
Brown, 25, spent part of last season on loan in Scotland. He played eight times for St Mirren. He helped the club finish 6th and they will be playing top flight football again next season.
The left sided defender did play ten league games for Lincoln City before departing on loan, but despite having just signed for the Imps last summer from Sheffield Wednesday, he could be on the move again this year.
St Mirren reportedly want to bring Brown back to the club on a permanent basis this summer. The Daily Record claim the 25-year-old will sign a two year deal in Scotland as St Mirren prepare to compete in European qualifiers this season.
The right move
Skubala survived without Brown last season and leaving at this time is probably best for both parties.
Brown does have another year left on his Imps contract, but this summer would be the last chance they would have to sell him for any real money.
This deal will free up some funds and allow Lincoln City to target other areas of their squad that can do with reinforcing.
Brown meanwhile will benefit from having already been at St Mirren and he will likely be a regular feature for them which seemed unlikely to be the case under Skubala.
However, Skubala did a good job turning around their campaign, and they have momentum heading into the upcoming season.
Things are looking good for the Imps, and it will be hoped that they can continue to push for the play-offs under Skubala once more. However, there is still a long way to go and a lot of work to be done in preparation for the League One season.
