St Mirren have announced that their 1987 Scottish Cup-winning captain Billy Abercromby has died at the age of 65.
The Glasgow-born midfielder made 367 Buddies appearances between his debut in March 1976 and his final outing for the club in a European Cup Winners’ Cup tie against Tromso in September 1987.
That was just five months after he led St Mirren to one of their greatest achievements as he captained a side managed by Alex Ferguson to victory over Dundee United in the Scottish Cup final. That triumph 37 years ago remains the club’s most recent in the tournament.
Abercromby, who eventually left the club in 1988 and had spells at Partick Thistle, Dunfermline, Cowdenbeath and East Stirling, made nine appearances in Europe for St Mirren, which remains a club record.
His death was announced the day before Saints find out their Europa Conference League qualifying opponents in what will be their first European campaign since Abercromby’s last season at the club.
“The thoughts of everyone at St Mirren are with Billy’s loved ones at the difficult time,” read a statement from the Buddies.
