Stephen Robinson tells St Mirren to be more clinical:

The Buddies gaffer believes the margin of victory over the Staggies could have been wider on Saturday.

Stephen Robinson watched St Mirren get back to winning ways against Ross County in Paisley — then urged them to be more clinical

The Buddies climbed back up to third place in the Premiership table at the weekend courtesy of a 2-0 win, while Hearts slumped to a 2-1 defeat at Aberdeen.

However, Saints once again created a number of good chances and could have enjoyed a wider margin of victory.

Robinson was pleased with the resilience of his squad after a hat-trick of defeats but wants to see a ruthless streak developed.

The manager, who turned 49 on Sunday, said: “I’m never happy, to be honest, as it should have been more.

“But to put on that level of performance when we haven’t won for a couple of weeks shows how tough mentally the squad are.

“We demanded we play our way and not got drawn into a long-ball game. That’s credit to the mentality of players. We could have won by more as we had plenty of chances but we got what we deserved.”

Robinson was delighted to see Jonah Ayunga back among the goals, after his recent extended injury absence, and with how well he linked up with Israeli forward Stav Nahmani.

On-loan Southampton defender Thierry Small was also praised given he has patiently waited for a chance to shine since returning north of the border.

He added: “When you’re out injured it’s a lonely place so a special mention for Jonah and [physio] Gerry Docherty and Gary McCall, the strength and conditioning coach, who have spent hours getting him to this level. It’s testament to how hard Jonah has worked and he’s got his just reward.
