In the event that MK Dons manage to narrow a 26-goal deficit in just three games, Stockport County has guaranteed a spot in League One for the upcoming campaign, and one man has led the last push.
In County’s previous two games, Hatters captain Paddy Madden has proven to be a leader and an experienced player. He played a crucial role in helping the team secure the six points that saw them virtually win on Tuesday night.
Although County have faced all three of the teams at the bottom of League Two away from home—two of which came after the Hatters’ previous two games—manager Dave Challinor stated after the game that his team’s true goal is to win League Two. With only Wrexham and Mansfield truly remaining in that match, Madden could prove to be the decisive factor once again to accomplish that goal.
That probably appears like a comfortable run at any other stage in the season, but at the end of the day, the teams facing non-league football were fighting for their life, and the games were in danger of becoming nerve-wracking and frustrating events.
This was particularly the case with Colchester, who controlled large chunks of the match and occasionally placed County under a lot of strain.
But Madden made sure his team left Sutton United and Colchester United with nothing but three points, as he so often does.
A few days later, he scored the game-winning goal against Colchester, which turned out to be a fairly even match against a well-trained Danny Cowley team, after scoring a hat-trick against Sutton on Saturday, which determined the 3-1 victory at Gander Green Lane.
It would have been one point from two without his goals in those games, and County would have been nervous going into their match against Morecambe at Edgeley Park on Saturday.
