Stoke City have parted ways with the former PNE, Sunderland and Norwich City boss
After 16 months in charge at the bet365 Stadium, Stoke City fired former Preston North End manager Alex Neil.
With 21 points from 20 games this season, the Potters are 20th in the Championship. Following a 0-1 loss to Sheffield Wednesday, where the Owls’ 91st-minute winner handed the hosts their fourth straight loss, Stoke decided to split with Neil.
In August 2022, Neil moved from Sunderland to Stoke after leading the Black Cats to promotion through the League One Play-Offs. During the summer transfer window, the Potters added eighteen players, including Daniel Johnson, a mainstay of PNE, and Ben Pearson, a former North End midfielder. Mehdi Leris, Wouter Burger, Ryan Mmaee, and other players cost seven figures in fees.
Paul Gallagher, who reconnected with Neil after leaving the Lilywhites’ coaching staff, will assume interim management of Tuesday night’s home game against Swansea City. Alongside Gallagher, Alex Morris, Ryan Shawcross, and Jonathan Gould remain at Stoke, but assistant manager Martin Canning has also left.
John Coates, the joint chairman of the Potters, stated: “We would like to thank Alex for his hard work during his time with Stoke City. He is a man of absolute integrity who has given his all.” We are appreciative of the foundation he helped lay in order to assemble a group of players in whom we have great confidence that they can turn things around this season and who can assist us achieve longer-term success.
“But given the current state of the team’s performance, we have decided to look for a new direction for the team at this time, which has been a difficult decision. The success of our club is the most important thing to me, and we are currently working to name Alex’s replacement.” “The recruitment process is now underway and we will explore all avenues to secure the best person for the job,” stated Ricky Martin, technical director. The position is a great opportunity, and I think it will draw in a lot of excellent applicants.
In light of the fact that Martin Canning departed the team, for which we sincerely thank him for his contributions as Alex’s assistant, Paul Gallagher has been appointed interim manager in anticipation of the upcoming home game against Swansea City. Alex Morris, Ryan Shawcross, and Jonathan Gould will support Paul. We hope they’re all well for the game on Tuesday night.”
