Wouter Burger has now produced his greatest performances of the season after Stoke City turned down a late transfer request for him during the January transfer window.
Wouter Burger’s response, dedication, and form following his choice to reject a transfer bid late in the January window have impressed Mark Robins.
Burger, who turned 24 on Sunday, has scored his first goal and put on some of his greatest performances of the season after Stoke turned down a request from FC Midtjylland, the leaders of the Danish Superliga, before the deadline.
The center midfielder, who is being evaluated this week after hobbling out of the last moments of a 3-1 victory against Swansea due to a knee injury, will undoubtedly get better over the following few months, according to Robins.
“I think he’s a really good player and if he can get on and off the ball quicker and when other players start to come back and when the level starts to go up again you’ll see a different player again.
“I really like him and I like what he’s done, the commitment that he’s shown. Some players can sulk if things haven’t gone their way or whatever but he hasn’t done any of that. He’s acted how you’d expect someone to act or want someone to act.
“He’s been fantastic and he’s led by example. I think he’s done really, really well.”
Jon Walters explained last week why Stoke turned down Midtjylland.
“A club contacted me early in the window regarding Wouter, and I told them, ‘Don’t wait until the end of the window,'” he stated. If you’re interested in someone, don’t wait until the last minute because I’ll have to find someone to replace Wouter’s stature on the team if the club can’t turn him down. It’s difficult to replace him as a player.

After a period of silence, the talk resumed on the final day of the window. I informed them that we were in a really challenging circumstance. We had that relationship, so Wouter enjoyed my candor and openness. He had the attitude that if something happened with this team and we agreed to it, great, but if not, “I’m all hands to the pump here, football’s football, I’m fully committed here.”
“I believe that’s his mentality, based on his performances. Wouter has demonstrated that he is the kind of player we need in the squad, someone who will fight for the club.
