Stoke City make emergency recall of teen keeper as injury strikes

Due to an injury sustained by Frank Fielding, Tommy Simkin has returned to Stoke City.

After an impressive three months on loan at Solihull Moors, the 18-year-old keeper, who was chosen in the England under-20s team today, will back up Jack Bonham in the Championship against Coventry tomorrow. Simkin, who plays for Solihull at the top of the National League, has six clean sheets in 19 games.

Fielding is scheduled for a scan to ascertain the severity of the injury, which is said to have occurred during training today.

Simkin, a childhood national martial arts champion, rose through the ranks at Stoke, starting out as an outfield player before making an impression as an under-14 emergency keeper. He’s been developing a reputation for courage and shot stopping.

“The loan has been a hugely worthwhile exercise,” technical director Ricky Martin stated, when the player returned with his reputation strengthened and had a concentrated time of first team games.

For a goalie Tommy’s age, holding down a regular starting spot and putting in consistently excellent performances is unusual, and it shows off his potential.

“We are excited to have him in and around our first team squad starting at Coventry tomorrow. We are grateful to Solihull Moors for giving him such a platform over the past few months.”
