All the latest on Sunderland’s search for a new manager as they prepare to face Leeds United.
Before a swift turnaround, Leeds United takes on Blackburn Rovers this weekend. Next week, there will be more midweek action to deal with. The Whites travel to Wearside on Tuesday to play Sunderland at the Stadium of Light after playing in Lancashire on Saturday.
Prior to that match, Sunderland fired head coach Tony Mowbray. This is the case even though the veteran guided the Black Cats to a play-off spot the previous year and they are still very much in contention for the top six this year. As they get ready to play Leeds, the Black Cats are currently looking for a new head coach. Here, we’ve compiled the most recent information on their hunt.
Interest in Hellberg
According to reports in the Scandinavian media, Sunderland is reportedly considering the appointment of Swedish boss Kim Hellberg as they continue their interview process for the role. Even though he is only 35 years old, Hellberg guided IFK Varnamo to fifth place in the Swedish top division the previous season.
After that season concluded last month, Hellberg left his job to pursue a new challenge. Apparently, Sunderland noticed and has reached out to the young manager to set up an interview for the role.
The other competitors
The hiring process for a new head coach should “not be a lengthy one,” according to The Sunderland Echo. The Black Cats board is reportedly still very interested in Reims boss Will Still.
According to the report, they also say that Hellberg is a possibility, but Julien Sable, the favourite of bookmakers, is less likely to be chosen. It’s reported that Sunderland is content to wait it out at this point, knowing that Mike Dodds will maintain order during his interim leadership. Based on the players who are currently being strongly linked, it appears that Sunderland is keen to appoint a younger manager in order to have someone who can work with a young squad.
