Kevin Phillips was not impressed with this decision during Sunderland vs West Brom.
Kevin Phillips has spoken out against the refereeing team during Sunderland vs West Brom in the Championship at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.
Kevin Phillips has expressed his disapproval of the officiating crew during Saturday’s Championship match between Sunderland and West Brom at the Stadium of Light.
When Jobe Bellingham deflected a shot past keeper Alex Palmer in the first half, the Black Cats believed they had taken the lead, but the linesman called it offside.
However, Sunderland’s attacker was clearly onside, and the goal should have stood according to Sky Sports’ replays.
At the half, former West Brom and Sunderland striker Phillips told Sky Sports, “I think they have been hard done by.” It is evident that the goal ought to have remained in place. It would have been given if we had VAR.
Palmer made a mistake, which Roberts caught on to, and then he makes another mistake which puts Bellingham—who is at the right place at the right time—in the path of it.
“It is obvious that he is being played onside when he blocks the pass rather than standing and watching it, so you have to say that the linesman made a serious error.
“You can only defend him by saying that the two West Brom players are obstructing his vision, but given the calibre of officiating these days, you should be able to see that.” It was appropriate. Sunderland can be extremely disappointed with themselves for not leading 1-0 at halftime.
The next game Sunderland plays is on Tuesday night at the Stadium of Light versus Leeds United.
